Music is a huge part of the One Salon culture. It keeps us going behind the chair and creates an energy that inspires our creativity and keeps the salon humming. In other words, we like to get our swerve on! Therefore, this is the first of many reoccurring posts we will be featuring about music.
Clients ask us all the time about what radio station we are playing or how they can get a copy of a specific mix, etc. The truth is, we create our own One Salon Radio. I personally program many different mixes for the salon. It’s something I have always enjoyed, as in my previous life I was a club DJ and 89X’s Marketing Director. So, I guess music has always been in my DNA.
We play many different styles of music at the salon. Mornings are chilled out. Depending on our mood, you’ll hear standards from Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, etc, or sometimes ambient electronica from acts like Air or Thievery Corporation. Tuesdays we usually go old school and play Motown. Wednesdays it’s usually House Music. The rest of the week it can range from 80’s New Wave to Indie Dance or Modern Rock. Heck, sometimes you might even hear a Britney Spears or Taylor Swift song. Shhhh…don’t tell anyone.
The One Salon Radio mix I get asked about the most is our Club X Mix. It’s named after 89X’s legendary Saturday night dance party at the State Theater that ran for 9 years back in the early 90’s. The music played there was a mix of late 80’s and early 90’s underground artists. Every Saturday, you would hear tracks from the Stone Roses, New Order, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Morrissey, Lords of Acid, Depeche Mode, Catherine Wheel, The Cure, and Blur just to name a few, as well as early Techno House music pioneers like Moby, Inner City, Joey Beltram, etc. It was a great time for music; just before Grunge exploded and made “Alternative Music” a mainstream buzz word.
Since One Salon owner, Janine Exline and I both have a fondness for this period of music, I decided to make it my first installment of One Salon Radio. And now I would like to share it with all of you. I recently uploaded the entire 4 hour, 3 part mix to Boxnet.com. If you are of a certain age like some of us at One Salon, it will have you reminiscing about the those crazy days in the early 90’s before the internet, iPhones, iPods and Autotune; when music was still somewhat interesting and diverse before it was hijacked by Ryan Seacrest and corporate America.
