One Salon and Spa Michigan

26 acts of kindness

As you may already know, the 26 Acts of Kindness initiative was conceived out of heartbreak over the Sandy Hook Elementary shooting tragedy.  NBC news correspondent Ann Curry took to social media and asked people to imagine what would happen if all of us committed to 26 acts of kindness to honor each life lost in Newtown.

In the tradition of this initiative, One Salon’s Reiki Master, Jan Canete will offer 26 Days of Kindness.  On the 1st and 3rd Friday of every month Jan will perform FREE Reiki treatments on cancer patients and survivors.  Reiki is a Japanese alternative wellness technique; a form of energy medicine used for stress reduction and relaxation that promotes healing within the body.  It aids in overall relaxation, pain management and assists in minimizing the side effects of cancer treatments such as nausea, anxiety and discomfort.

“At Columbia, we have initiated a study that incorporates the role of Reiki practitioners in applying mind–body principles and energy healing to help to prepare patients for breast cancer surgery and emotionally accept the loss of their breast(s). We must continue to strive to provide care that is patient-centered and reduces the stress and trauma of disease.”  ~Taken from “Alternative Therapy for Breast Cancer: Outcomes, Obstacles and Opportunities” published in the April 2011 issue of Annals of Surgical Oncology, author Sheldon Marc Feldman, MD, FACS, and Chief of Breast Surgical Oncology at New York’s Columbia University Medical Center.
